Guilderland, NY – This is a very exciting time of year. Children of all ages are heading back to school. It is an annual cycle within which many lives operate. It is the spring of education: a new start, a new chance, the beginning of a round of growth. Even if you have finished formal schooling, I bet you still remember the back-to-school experience when you feel the cooling air as summer ends. Use this taste of autumn to feel like a kid again, to feel hope for new learning and new accomplishments. Learning never ends and positive attitude to accompany it must continue to thrive.
At Guilderland Martial Arts, we are wrapping up a wonderful summer of training and fun. I had the opportunity to train and compete with my family and enjoy our son Mete in Summer camp. Now it is time to start planning our new growth and learning in Taekwondo just as we are preparing to return to school. For some of us, this means we must start our planning to compete at the state championships and nationals; it is the cycle that closely follows the school year. For others it is time to finalize training for the next level of Blackbelt or to plan the training through the stepping stone color belts for the year.
As you begin this school year, whether for yourself, your family or the community, remember to balance and plan your life for growth. Without the coming autumn and the return to school with all of its disciplines and foci, the winter would seem all too abrupt and the summer no relief at all. We need change, the change that the seasons represent. We also need balance, the balance that academic and mental growth supplemented with proper physical exercise and physical goals brings to our existence.
As martial artists, we often find it easy to apply lessons in martial arts to our academic or job related learning. Whatever your passion is for physical activity, it too can drive and positively affect your mental accomplishments. This is the yin and yang of life. Without the physical the mind grows weak, without the mind the body can only do so much. Without hard work there can be no appreciated vacation, and without the vacation the hard work slowly pales. Without the fall there can be no spring, and without the work and effort of this school year there could be no summer off.
I hope everyone in our community enjoyed their summer and I wish all of our students, faculty and staff in our esteemed Guilderland Central School District the best of success and growth this year. Keep a positive attitude about everything you do. Even if you feel it unwarranted, it will always make every experience better.
