|Guilderland, NY – Along with my family, I attended the Guilderland High School Graduation again this year. It was great to see many of my math students and our Taekwondo students, both current and former, walk across the stage to receive their diplomas. It was also nice to for alumni Mete and Zeynep to see friends from school and community on their special day.
I like to be on stage with other faculty so that I may be close to the action and participate by handing the diplomas up to those honorees that have the privilege of giving them to the students. It also allows me the opportunity to snap a few great pictures, two of which are featured to the right: Blackbelt Assistant Instructor Allison Rosa (center) who will attend Sage College this fall, and Blackbelt Instructor Ryan Gundermann (bottom) who will attend HVCC in the fall.
It was truly wonderful to see Allison and Ryan graduate because they have been students here at Guilderland Martial Arts since second and third grade respectively. They have made more contributions to our Guilderland Martial Arts community and positively affected the growth of more students than I am able to enumerate here. They posses excellent character and a complete understanding of selfless service that has been enjoyed by every one of us here. Their knowledge of the martial arts and interpersonal skills have made them invaluable to our classes and camps.
At graduation time the focus of speeches and conversations often turns toward our future being in the hands of the young graduates. I am happy to say that this is the case and that I am delighted to trust our future to students like Allison and Ryan. I look forward to hearing great things about their positive impact on our world.
We have attended five graduations for our three children so far, and expect to attend at least three more for college including grad school. Each time I am reminded of the great character our own children have. Character that was developed along the road by my outstanding colleagues in the Guilderland School District and others they have met, but much of this character has its roots in our family. Family is the most important (which is likely why I mention mine in just about every article) and a lot of the character in our family comes from our training together in the martial arts.
Congratulations Ryan, Allison and all of the GHS students on your achievements. It gives me great comfort to know that you will be continuing to positively impact the world both in and out of Taekwondo.
