TOWN OF GUILDERLAND ANNOUNCES THE AWARD OF A GRANT FOR NEW SIDEWALK PROVIDING IMPROVED ACCESS TO THE GUILDERLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY, GUILDERLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND YMCA
Guilderland, NY – The Town of Guilderland proudly announces that the NYS Department of Transportation has granted the Town’s application for funding in the amount of $680,800 for the construction of a new ADA-compliant concrete sidewalk on the south side of Western Avenue from Regency Park Drive (SEFCU building) to Mercy Care Lane (Guilderland Public Library). The dates for the design work and anticipated construction will soon be announced.
Town Supervisor Peter G. Barber commented that: “This new sidewalk will link nearby residential neighborhoods and local businesses to the Library and improve access to Guilderland Elementary School and the YMCA.” The Town’s grant application was supported by Timothy Wiles, Director of the Guilderland Public Library, who stated: “It is very common to see pedestrians making their way to the Library along Western Avenue, perhaps coming from apartment complexes in the area. Often the pedestrians are parents with young children. The Library is thrilled that their trip to visit us will be much safer due to the new sidewalks. We thank the Town of Guilderland for working on this grant for the benefit of all.”
Supervisor Barber added that: “This sidewalk is the Town’s latest success in obtaining very competitive funding for a safe and walkable community with connected neighborhoods, businesses, schools, library, and parks.” The Town recently received an award for $297,000 for a sidewalk on West Old State Road to Lynnwood Elementary School and NYS Department of Transportation has announced $1.4 million in funding for the construction of left turn lanes at the Carman Road and Lydius Street intersection and adjacent sidewalks. Supervisor Barber concluded that: “The Town looks forward to working with our partners at the NYS Department of Transportation on the timely design and construction of these sidewalk and highway projects.”
